How it works

The rules behind the order

As an experiment, I’ve tried ranking every Formula 1 driver using OpenSkill. It rates recorded results across multiple eras, but it does not yet separate a driver’s performance from the competitiveness or reliability of their car. There is more work to do, but I wanted to share it.

Era score

A driver’s cautious OpenSkill estimate (μ − 3σ), re-centred so that 50 is the average among established drivers active that season. It shows how far above or below their own field a driver rated.

Peak

The highest era score at the end of a completed season, after at least five career Grand Prix starts.

Final

The era score after the driver’s last Grand Prix start. The underlying rating remains frozen after retirement.

Retirements

Mechanical and ambiguous retirements are ignored; clearly driver-attributed incidents remain.

Shared drives & ties

Every sharing driver gets the best shared-car result. Ties receive the higher shared rank.

Event weight

Calendar length is adjusted logarithmically around a 16-race reference. Sprints count one third and historically half-point Grands Prix count one half.
